Auckland to Rotorua

Good morning, New Zealand! This morning we boarded our tour bus and headed out for a fun day on our way to Rotorua. We stopped at the Waitomo Caves to see the incredible Glow Worm Grotto and the Limestone Caves.   We saw literally thousands of tiny glow worms, and had a local guide who gave a lot of history about her culture and the caves.

We enjoyed lunch in a small town, it’s just happened to be where  Isobel’s mother lived . She is a very talented lady and brought some quilting squares for a couple of the ladies to see. One of them bought some as a souvenir and for use in her quilting.

After we ate, we walked around a bit and then had a scenic ride on the way to Rotorua.

This evening, we had another memorable “Be My Guest” dinner at the Maori village.  We had a wero (challenge) from a Maori warrior during a Powhiri, a ceremonial welcome, at the Tamaki Family Marae. “Terry” was OUR fearless leader that was challenged!

Terry made “peace offerings”, and was led with the others into the village.

It was an interactive journey into the village, where we gained insight into life in New Zealand before European settlement.

The markings on their faces indicate who their mother and father are. Each individual has his or her unique design.

The meal was cooked for us in a hangi, their traditional way of cooking in the earth.

We had a feast of meats, fish, white sweet potatoes, potatoes, and various vegetables, along with delicious desserts.

The Maoris put on a wonderful song and dance performance too.

On the way back to the hotel, our driver drove around and around a round about while we sang (after he started singing) “She’ll be coming Around the Mountain!”  We all laughed about that and enjoyed the night.

One thing you notice about Rotorua as soon as you enter is the smell!  They have sulphur springs that have the smelly aroma of sulphur.  Yuk!

More tomorrow!
